“If writers could shake things off, they probably wouldn’t write. The writer’s business is to take things to heart, to explore all possibilities.” Yes!
I heat my shop with a woodstove. I've promised myself to be vigilant and check the chimney pipe connections every time. But I don't. And then there is a moment of paranoia until I am convinced this isn't the day I burn my beloved wood shop down.
You did the right thing. My house in New Orleans burned down in 2000, and two of my three cats perished. I can't believe your neighbor is so cavalier. Or the fireman. Enjoy those beautiful cranes.
Did I ask you if you've read Robert Louis Stevenson's "Travels With a Donkey in the Cévannes?" It's delightful.
Hell, that bonfire would have freaked me out, too.
Remind me to tell you my bonfire story sometime.. happened some years ago and even involves four A-10's from the fighter wing out of Battle Creek..
Hey! Let's record it for your podcast!

Glad everything is ok now!

Oh, Bonnie, I’m all is okay now! What a jerky human neighbor, unlike the cranes.
Love those birds!
Oh my goodness, I would have done the same thing.
Watching those cranes must have given you some peace.
Thanks for sharing!
Scary. I’m glad you called the fire department. You did the right thing. On another note: The crane video is beautiful!
